Over the years, the establishment went through several name changes (initially "Toma's Tavern," and later "At the Shepherd's"). In 1892, the owner at the time decided to rename it "At the Cathedral Church," sparking a fierce protest from the Serbian Orthodox Church. As the dispute remained unresolved, the owner temporarily placed a question mark ("?") on the door. This temporary sign became so popular among Belgraders and tourists alike that it became the tavern's official name—and remains so to this day.
